A mental note.

This is going to be a little bit of a different post, but its something I want to address.

I’ve been having a bit of a down month and feeling really un inspired / un motivated to do anything. My anxiety was running so high that I was scared to check emails or open my laptop. If I didn’t see it, it didn’t exist to me in reality yet, only my mind. I don’t know what I was hiding from (probably emails and uni grades) but it terrified me to the point that I would cry to myself and then get angry at myself for crying.

I’m going to apologise in advance for the structure of this post, this is something that I should probably plan and proof read but if I do that, I fear I’ll take something out that is actually important. I want to talk about mental health and talk about some things that I suffer from in the hopes that someone out there can read this and maybe go and talk to someone to get help or just have a chat.

For some reason the month of July has been a low month for me. I was on Uni holidays and I guess idle hands/minds mean I have extra time to tell myself what I hate about me, and the worst part is – I listened.

“you’re not good enough, you should probably stop trying”. “Ugh, omg Caitlan, why are you so shit at everything”.  “All your friends are better than you, they’re getting on with their lives and you’re still here, worthless”. “don’t eat that, you probably should stop eating all together”. “one meal a day is enough for you”.

This and more is what was going through my head for the majority of the past month or so. That doesn’t mean that I wasn’t happy and loving life at some points, because I was. But sometimes that makes it worse. It makes me feel guilty. “why are you having fun when you’re so gross?” Then it would spark a darkness wherein which I didn’t want to get out of bed, which made me feel guilty for staying in bed all day and make me feel worse. Its a cycle.

I know I’m not the only one to feel like this, and I know it sometimes gets worse than this but its not a competition as to who can feel the worst about themselves/life. It never is nor should it be.

If you’re having feelings like this, then its the best to talk to someone. Start out with your parents, or of you can’t / don’t feel comfortable with that, your friends. Lord knows my best friends knew me better than I knew myself at times and they understood everything. I eventually worked up the courage (was encouraged by my best friend at the time) to go and see someone. I didn’t want to, but I knew I should. My main concerns were that I’d get judged, or I’d get dismissed with just a ‘get over it’, but that wasn’t the case at all. They listened and helped, they helped me put a name to what was plaguing me and because of that, when I feel myself spiralling into the depths of my own self destructive mind, I know that the feeling won’t last because I know i’m not ‘broken’.

Also, sometimes its easier to open up to someone new because you don’t have to see them in your everyday life. Its like writing in a journal that no one will ever find.

Through talking to a professional I found out I have something they refer to as a ‘negative schema’ which is basically when something negative comes to mind, I latch onto it and make it worse and sometimes end up sitting in a dark room for a day or a week, as long as it takes for me to break out of it myself. Now, you may read this and feel the same way, which might be correct, but, self diagnosis is not the way to go. Please if you are feeling this way talk to someone. If not someone you know, try these helplines.

If you’re reading this and think you may recognise these symptoms in someone you care about, please approach the subject lightly and don’t push them for answers, sometimes all they can say is ‘I don’t know why I feel this way’. which is true, sometimes I won’t know why I feel as bad as I do, but it results in me being depressed and not eating for a day or two. Everyone is different. Please don’t try and say ‘snap out of it’ or ‘we all love you why are you sad’. For me, that makes it worse, makes me feel like I can’t control it, or that I’m not worthy of the love and affection that I get from family and friends. If you have someone who gets these mood swings, just hold them if they need it, lay with them, keep a watchful eye on them, but mainly all I need is someone to just be there for me when I need it. But of course everyone is different.

I’m not posting this for pity, or to try and help others self diagnose. I want to get it out there that no one is perfect and sometimes the cheeriest people can be empty on the inside. Mental health is so important and it isn’t something that we should feel ashamed about. Sometimes it isn’t just one thing, its a multitude of things and different aspects of mental health that come into play with someones mind. But just know that there are people who can help you and the people around you love you. You’re not alone.

Thank you so much for reading, and don’t forget:

The ‘Boyfriend explains what makeup is’ Tag.

I love a good makeup tag, and I also love my significant other so… lets put them together, yeah?

I saw Sarah from PastelSparkles do this tag with her boyfriend and it was just so great to read. I recommend you checking it out. Click here.

Kris has a pretty good knowledge of what products are and what goes where, he just lacks a bit of execution. Shoutout to him for helping me. To find out what he gets up to, Click here.

So here it is! I think he did quite well and I hope you like this fun little post!

BB Cream: BB Cream? For dry skin? Maybe? Most creams are.. Vitamin B?

Primer: … … … uhh… I don’t know if its before or after foundation… maybe ‘degreaser’. Or… to make foundation go on good.

Foundation: OH! That’s like the base coat!

Concealer: For hiding,… your blemishes..

Powder: Just general? Does it have a more specific name?
Like what? I don’t know. Surely theres more than one kind of powder.
What kinds of powder are there:? Baby powder? Do I Use it?.. no…

Brow Gel: I guess its like hair gel, for your eyebrows.

Eyeshadow: For colouring your eyelids.. Makes your eyes pop..?

Eyeliner: Outlines your eye. Via the eyelid..

Mascara: Makes your lashes longer and or straighter…

Corrector: I assume its not like white out… maybe for uneven skin? Texture? Or not…

Contour: Contour is for cheek definition.

Blusher: To make it look like you’re embarrassed. To make your cheeks look like they have life in them.

Highlight: It’s the opposite of contour, so it goes.. on the cheek bones?

Bronzer: I know it goes on the cheeks, but I don’t know why people do it, I don’t know if it has a function or purpose, like… I’ve only seen it on dragqueens… You don’t wear it do you? *hides under blanket*

Baking: Like, how we’re making dinner right now? To blow dry your face, do dry the makeup?

Strobing: Is that when you bash your face with the sponge?

Setting Spray: Is that like hair gel for your face? Wait… you use it to set.. your face? Is that even a thing?

Lip Liner: Its like eyeliner but for your lips.

He did pretty well, I have to admit. Although his answer for strobing was far from correct, and for the record, he’s referring to when I use a sponge to blend in foundation. /sigh.

Thank you so much for reading, and don’t forget:

30 Days of Makeup Challenge!

I’ve been in somewhat of a #MakeupRut recently. It happens every now and then, I get overwhelmed by my makeup collection and then just don’t know what to do with myself and all my pretty things! I’ve decided to give this a go. To inspire me to do looks, create new things and hopefully get myself back in the groove of putting stuff on my face!

I found this list on a beauty group on Facebook and I instantly fell in love with the options! I didn’t invent this list or the ‘challenge’ that is 30daysof….. etc. But I think it’ll be fun!

I will start from Friday the 1st of July 2016 and work my way through the days. I don’t usually wear makeup every day, but for this, I’ll make the exception.

13566217_10154301776282929_197277919_n

As you can see, the list is nothing extreme. It has a great mix of ‘out there’ and do-able makeup looks. Everything is open to interpretation. I have a few things already planned for July including birthdays and I’m quite excited to do my makeup a little different for those!

To get inspiration, Pinterest is going to be my best friend! I always trawl through and add pretty looks to my Makeup Inspiration board.

The top three I’m really excited for are: Autumn makeup, Rockabilly and Lashes, Lashes, Lashes!
The top three that I’m a little worried for are: Ombre anything (I’ve not got a lot of practice doing ombre looks), I’d never wear this and 4 products only.

I’ll be posting my looks on instagram and hopefully be doing a weekly roundup here on my blog explaining what products I used!

If you’d like to be apart of this then I really encourage it! Use the hashtag #30daysofmakeup so we can all see everyones looks.

Thank you so much for reading, and don’t forget:

BUAxLUSH 1st Birthday Event Recap

If you’re an Australian Blogger and you’re not apart of Bloggers United AU then you are missing out.

I’m sure you’ve heard me talk about Bloggers United AU before, and I bet you all know what LUSH is so to my delight I was invited to a somewhat exclusive event involving two of my favourite things! Bloggers and Bath goodies!

If you want to read about other BUA and LUSH events just click those links!

To save this post turning into an Oscars acceptance speech, I’ll get the “Thank you’s” out of the way now. A MASSIVE thank you to LUSH Marion for having us and a sincere heartfelt thank you to Bloggers United AU and especially our state reps Kate and Nici. They’ve done so much to unite the Adelaide bloggers and as corny as it sounds I actually feel apart of something. *play the music* I’d also like to thank: Jesus, my mum and all of you lovely people, WE DID IT!

The Event:
We were welcomed by the team at LUSH Marion some of whom I recognised from the previous event (they even recognised lil’ ol’ me) and I was complimented right away on my lipstick. (Jeffrey Star’s Blue Velvet). As I mentioned before, the event was somewhat exclusive the numbers were set by the store (so I’ve been told) and I think there would have been 15 of us in total. There was a lovely LUSH lady writing out name-tags for us as we entered. BEST. IDEA. EVER. I recognised nearly everyone from their blogs and instagram feeds but I couldn’t remember their actual name! (for some). It was mingle time and that meant PHOTOS!

I got to hang out with these two gorgeous ladies! To the left is Ren from Ren Nay, super lovely lass, and to the right is über babe Zoe from Zoesbeautyescape.

The lighting in the store was great for products but atrocious for photos. The lights are all warm and most of them are down-lights. This meant we were all quite orange toned and horrid shadows were cast across our faces. Never the less, the selfie spree continued! This time bringing in Steph from Howtogirl.net. It was so nice to finally meet her after talking through instagram so much!

I was so happy to finally get a chance to use the big ‘Adelaide Event’ cut out after seeing it so much at the BUA event back in Feb.

It was now time for the talks! Each time there is a LUSH event they (obviously) tell you about the company. I find it fascinating to know all the different ingredients that are in the LUSH products. We had a short talk from each of the staff about certain products, learning all kinds of facts!

Products mentioned were, Bananas, Avocado, Honey(cute pic coming up), Roses, Almonds, and even Potatoes!

As we were passing around the honey to smell, Ren was clearly too keen and kept my fingers captive. I was just scared I was gonna drop it. :/

The super kind and knowledgable team from LUSH Marion! You guys are great!

The Hunt:
Once the talk was over, it was time for a little competitive fun. We all teamed up (I was with Ren and Zoe) and we were each given a list of products to find – scavenger hunt style!

Zoe and I deep in thought reading ingredients.

“Hey girls, look like you’re searching but you can’t find the stuff” Well, we can’t take artistic direction.

Someone obviously has to win, and in the end it was the Steph and Felicia – from thebeautyandthegeekau! Celebratory selfies, winners are grinners girls! These two were on fire when it came to the scavenger hunt, they won by a tie breaker. Great effort!

Shopping Time:
Once the Scavenger hunt was over we had free reign over the store to shop till we dropped! It was really good to get time to wanter through LUSH it’s always so busy! But because there was just the small group of us, we had time with the staff to get a decent consultation if we needed and they were more than happy to offer any advice. Last event I picked up some shampoo and conditioner because at the time, my hair was beyond dry! But since cutting my hair I haven’t needed the extra care, so I decided to go with some skincare instead! I’ll be doing a seperate post about my LUSH Haul! So keep your peepers peeled! I do have to say thank you to Tom for helping me and for being super honest about what products to get. (:

Zoe stealing the focus of my super artistic product shot!

Sunny side bubble bar out shining me with its fleeky highlight.

Its just not right unless you smell everything!

Once we’d finished shopping, it was time for some last minute silly selfies! We took the opportunity to selfie with the BUA board. We got caught mid selfie by the photographer so the next two shots are like ‘Selfie-Ception’.

It was so nice to have a photographer there, taking great group shots etc, so we didn’t always have to be holding phones, cameras and trying new products.

Forever in the search for good lighting! The last few snaps and that was it!

This is now the background on my phone: ❤

I’m so glad to be apart of a group of likeminded people. I’m so excited to network and attend future events.

Thank you so much for reading, and don’t forget:

My Makeup Story – Tag.

Gather round lovelies, its story time! I’ve been seeing this tag go around the bloggy world and I thought I might hop on board and do it. Super babes Sarah from PastelSparkles and Zoe from Zoesbeautyescape have done it and I want to be apart of the cool crowd and do it too! So, lets get to it!

If you want to do this tag, too, I’ll leave the questions (un answered) at the bottom of the post for you to copy and paste)

1. When did you first start getting into make up?

Like most, I’d always had an interest in it. I’d sit and ogle my mums collection. Then my older sister and I would steal it and play ‘dress ups’ to a certain degree. It wasn’t until I was maybe 14/15 that I started to wear it out of the house. I remember my sister helping me with eyeshadow before school on some days. Like many of you, I got into eyeliner early, I’d line my eyes like there was no tomorrow. I would use makeup as self expression, I wore blue and pink mascara (at the same time) to school. I was the weird outspoken but kinda shy arty kid. From there I’d always been into it.

2. What was the first make up you bought?

Probably foundation. I figured out early on that a good foundation is the key to a good face of makeup. I could use any old eyeshadows and make them work, but if the foundation wasn’t up to scratch then the whole thing went down hill.

3. What is the newest/oldest items in your collection?

Oldest: Probably a body shop bronzer.
I don’t know why I even own it, I’m not tanned at all. Its just sitting in my collection hardly used. Its so pretty though.

Newest: Urban Decay Vice 4 Palette. I only bought it last week along with some Too Faced goodies. ❤ Mecca.

4. Who is your celebrity make up idol?

Its tricky because celebrities tend to never wear the same makeup twice, ya know? But people who I always admire the makeup of – Taylor Swift – Can rock a red lip like no other, Mila Kunis – Queen of resting bitch face and a sharp smokey eye, Nina Dobrev – a goddess.

5. Who is your favourite YouTube guru?

For looks: Jaclyn Hill, Kathleen Lights, Tati, RachhLoves, (probably more but I can’t think of them)
For Reviews: Tati, RachhLoves, Julia Graf (probably more) I trust the opinions of these three ladies. They’re always to the point and actually know what they’re talking about without being dismissive or rude and have totally different styles of filming so its never boring!

6. What is a look/trend that you wish you could pull off?

Bright lipstick. I don’t know if its a confidence thing or if it just doesn’t suit my skin tone, but I just can’t wear it/don’t wear it often. I have no problems with dark lippy, blue, black, brown, green anything ‘weird’ like that. But bright lips is something I wish I had confidence in.

7. Any make up disasters?

Always. Too much bronzer, not filling in my eyebrows until I was 21! TWENTY ONE, PEOPLE! leaving the house without lipstick (concealer lips – yuck). Blue eyeshadow, rose pink cheeks and no eyeliner. Oh man, there’s too many.

8. What’s your favourite make up brand?

I don’t have just one brand. I love Australis and Face of Australia, Tarte, Urban Decay, Stila…

9. What is your favourite make up tip/trick that you wish you knew sooner?

How to line hooded eyes. Ugh. Such a life changer.

10. Which 5 products could you not live without?

Chi Chi brow pomade
Stila – eyes are the window – soul palette
Liquid Liner – Maybelline Hyper sharp/ Bourjois 16h liner
Mascara – Essence I ❤ extreme, Too Faced – better than sex
Foundation – L’Oreal True Match Lumi

And there we have it, my little makeup story. I’d love to see your responses, the questions are down below, or you could even answer some in the comments.

Thank you so much for reading, and don’t forget:

Winter Skincare Tips

We’ve been having some wild weather here in Aus. The rains-a-pouring and the fires-a-roaring (in a fireplace… to keep warm… not a bush fire. Because its raining a lot – thats kind of redundant). Its time to protect our toesies with some warm socks and our skin with some MOISTure. So hands up if your skin dries out in the cooler months. *raises hand. Hands up if you’re skin is dry anyway and winter brings out the worst in your skin *raises hand. Yay.

Today I’m gonna share with you some of my favourite products that help me battle flakey, scaly and sore dry skin! Lets get a wriggle on.

Greasemeup

daytimenighttime

Neutrogena Hydro-Boost range. I’ve been talking about this range a heap on my blog because its one of my favourite skincare ranges. I’ve done a full review here, so give it a click to read about it.

img_0802

Kismet Jardin Hydra Gem – again, another product I’ve been raving about. I love this for its hyaluronic acid and restorative features. Lightweight, perfect for all skin types and works well under makeup as a primer. Read full review here!

DSCN3487

Weleda Skin Food – for rough and dry skin
This thick citrus scented balm/cream is an absolute saviour! I feel like this is so heavy duty (in a good way). I use this for the really dry areas as a spot treatment. Especially my elbows, knees, hands, cuticles, feet/heels and anywhere else I can reach. Skin Food is 100% Certified Natural and one of Weleda’s best sellers. Its been around for 90 years and for a product to still be so popular after all that time, they’ve gotta be doing something right. A universal product like this is an essential for anyone who wants to take care of their skin. In Winter think Weleda!

DSCN3485

NS-8 Natural Footcare – Intensive Leg Care cream.
Like the name states this is targeted at your legs! I suffer from scaly legs all year round due to the dryness of my skin. Its one of the reasons I wear leggings/stockings or pants almost daily and one of the reasons I don’t show off my legs. When your skin actually starts flaking off, you know something is up. I received this in one of the goodie bags from Bloggers United AU Adelaide Event and dismissed it up until about a month ago when the weather started getting really cold. My skin looked horrid, every time I’d shave my legs the follicles would flake – not pretty or pleasant. Causing sores on my legs – painful and not pretty.  I had to wait until there was no broken skin until I could use this (or any product really – lets be safe guys) as it contains menthol. (Menthol for cooling and refreshingness). I’ve been trying to use this at least once a day (usually before bed). Its a smooth texture that takes some work to get it fully soaked into your legs but it doesn’t feel sticky or greasy. THANK GOODNESS! I have noticed a difference in the texture of my legs and I’m so happy about that. This is available from chemist warehouse for around $14.50 AUD.

DSCN3483

REDWIN – Daily Intensive Nourishment – with Moroccan Argan Oil
I use this as an all over moisturiser when I feel like I need it. Its not apart of any regime but, it is great all year round. It is perfect for soothing sunburn in Summer and great for adding a bit of moisture to your skin in Winter. My partner uses this and he really likes it. Being a man of simple products I got him onto this stuff (so he’d not think about using my expensive lotions). It doesn’t irritate skin – such as eczema (on him at least – please patch test before applying to yourself) and helps get a wrangle on his cracked feet! Sometimes I lather my feet up with this and then get into bed (sometimes with socks, sometimes without – I know that can be a bit gross for some). Its the perfect product for having next to the bed or desk where its easily accessible at all times. It doesn’t go oily or greasy on the skin either – I hate that feeling.

DSCN3484

Natralus – paw paw products.
Now, as dry as my skin is, I don’t usually get cracked lips – THANK THE LORD! Lucky me. EXCEPT for when I’m sick, which usually goes hand in hand with Winter. When I’m sick with the flu or the common cold the first thing to alert me to the illness is a sore throat and splitting lips. Right from my cupids bow all the way down, under my lip to where the lip connects to my gums, splits. It is one of the most painful things and It happens whenever I’m ill. When I was sick recently the only thing to save my lips was the Natralus paw paw ointment. It was so thick and smooth it made smiling bearable. I also get cracked and flakey skin around my nose when I’m sick and this product worked so well for easing that pain and fixing the whole situation. I think you should stock up on Natralus paw paw products this Winter because they’ll save your life!

Thats it for this post, I hope you look into some of these products if you’re one to get super dry skin in the Winter. Stay warm!

Thank you so much for reading, and don’t forget:
